Meditation helps us on many levels: from simple relaxation to freedom from suffering to a full liberation of heart and mind. Meditation allows us to relax and focus on the moment and on what is important to us.

There are many reasons why people meditate. For some, it is part of a spiritual journey and has to do with the expansion of awareness and how they perceive and experience life. Some simply want to relax, and this benefit of meditation is self-evident. Other people are interested in the benefits of meditation for health and general well-being. Here are some reasons to consider meditation:

Some major health benefits of regular meditation include:

  • Lower blood pressure
  • Better sleep
  • Less anxiety
  • Faster healing
  • Decreased use of drugs, alcohol and cigarettes
  • Lower cholesterol
  • Stronger immune response

Meditation Helps You Heal Faster and Live Longer

Studies have shown that people who took eight weeks of mindfulness meditation training had far fewer cases of colds and flu and less severe infections compared to a group of non-meditators. There are many reasons why meditation helps to heal faster and live longer: it lowers blood pressure, it improves relaxation resulting in better sleep, it leads to less anxiety, it lowers cholesterol and it supports a stronger immune response.

Meditation Helps You Sleep Sounder

The practice of meditation helps some people get better rest and it reduces the stress hormones like cortisol, which can also interfere with sleep.

Meditation Eases Pain

Mindfulness meditation has been shown to help ease chronic discomforts like neck and back pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia and recurring headaches. It teaches you to open your senses to your breathing, the sound of the wind rustling or the feel of the sun on your skin.

Meditation Improves Your Ability to Focus

Mindfulness training improves your ability to maintain attention and regulate emotional distractions. People who do 20-minute meditation sessions per day can perform better as they are able to ignore the distractions and simply focus on the task.

Meditation Reduces Anxiety and Stress

Recent studies are proving that meditation can actually lower levels of the stress hormone cortisol in our bodies. How? Being more aware of our immediate experiences through meditation may keep us from stewing over the past or worrying about the future.

Meditation Makes You Feel Less Moody

Many of us automatically interpret things in a negative way and assume the worst about ourselves and others. This can cause depression, which meditation has been shown to alleviate.
